My Restoring Wellness participants have gotten accustomed to me saying, "No product, pill, meal replacement shake, or diet will ever be sustainable or as effective as learning to incorporate holistic living and plant based eating." This image is a great example of this; you really must implement lifestyle change to receive results that are different than yesterday.
This is not to say that there isn't a place for therapeutic use of supplements, which better aid the restoring of the gut lining or help to balance the adrenals, for example. Same thing can be said about meal replacement shakes; they have their place too. However, you will not get skinny or obtain miracle healing by relying on them, and nothing will be sustainable if you do not implement change.
My 6-week Restoring Wellness program teaches you all about lifestyle changes. Slowly released via daily emails and day-by-day website pages, this program helps you acclimate to a new way of thinking and living to allow the innate self-healing abilities of a body in balance.

My story for Information Press this month is on Circadian Rhythm Eating - which suggests there is a right time of day to eat specific foods.
Nutritionist Linda Morgan from the University of Surrey conducted a study where she gave participants the exact same foods during PM hours and in AM hours. She tested their blood sugar levels after each mealtime. She found that blood glucose levels after the evening meal were much higher than when the exact same meal was eaten during the AM hours. Other studies conducted on mice showed they were 40 percent leaner, had lower blood pressure and cholesterol by eating during the eight most active hours of the day.

I recently received my order of Car Magnets from www.buildasign.com and I'm thrilled with their quality.
I've ordered car magnets in the past from several inexpensive (read cheaply made) online printing companies and the paint has chipped off and faded, and one magnet even blew off in the wind!
These magnets from Build A Sign are not only affordable, but durably made as well. The colors are bright; the letters are clear; the magnet is sturdy and holds on strong; and their website was so easy to use. They have plenty of clip art to use or you can upload your own design and logo.
Stay tuned for a $25 giveaway to shop for your own fantastic marketing materials from www.buildasign.com!
Dear disease and injury, I am grateful for the journey.
10 years ago, this month, I broke my back in four places and spent Christmas in the hospital. More importantly, over the past 15 years, I've gone from 199 pounds, addicted to junk food and suffering so much inflammation I couldn't take my own socks off ... to getting a degree in holistic medicine, going vegetarian, raw vegan, juice cleansing over 300 days, practicing yoga, hiking, meditating, walking around over 60 pounds lighter, and living life to the fullest.
All that I have come to learn, both in my personal journey with holistic health, from my hundreds of clients' journeys, and from my education in holistic medicine, I share with you in my new 6-week Restoring Wellness program.
---- ---- ---- ---- "I grew up in your typical Standard American Diet (SAD) home eating some of the best American comfort food and spending my allowance on junk food, donuts and soda. Now, don't get my wrong, Mom made everything from scratch, including bread, biscuits, gravy, home-raised pork, chickens, eggs and the works. I didn't even know what Dinty Moore meant when somebody from school asked about my soup. That said, despite Mom's best efforts, it was tough to get me to eat veggies and I rarely enjoyed fruit. I predominately ate meat and carbs. Even though my mother tried to limit my intake, soda was a daily beverage. I was never very active but wasn’t exactly lazy either. (*** click the link at the bottom of this post for a wonderful addition to this story, but for now ... keep reading***)
In June 2003 at 23 years old, I was diagnosed with Dermatomyositis, a rare Autoimmune disease. I struggled with reaching my feet and lifting my hands above my head due to severe connective tissue inflammation. My menstrual cycle was so irregular I at one point went 70 days between cycles. At 5’7″, I was 175 pounds, a SAD eater and struggling to find the strength to be an active person. I enjoyed dance, hiking and the occasional yoga class but I was far from routine and needed a lifestyle change. So I quit my corporate job, moved back home with mom and took my savings to see a Naturopathic Doctor. He put me on several herbal concoctions and a high protein, low carb diet. I avoided all things packaged and processed and completely stopped ALL sugar intake, including fruit. I was overridden with Candida from the inside out. I began losing weight quickly. I maintained this system steady for 3 months until I couldn’t afford it anymore. I had rid my body of all yeast overgrowth, walked around 20 pounds lighter, and started hiking and doing yoga regularly.
That Christmas I was in a horseback riding accident and broke my back in 4 places. I was bed ridden for several months wearing a lovely designer body brace (insert laugh here) and unable to continue my new found physical independence. During my recovery, I began reaching for comfort foods again. Due to the lack of physical movement and the foods I began eating, I gained 25 pounds and battled with the disease and Candida once more."

Sometimes the wisest and most healing words come directly from my clients' mouths, even though they're asking me for the advise and healing.
As a Holistic Wellness Coach, my services end up spanning such a vast array of topics so individualized that it is difficult to summarize or even list what one might expect during our coaching session/appointment.
As they open up about their ailments and desires for wellness, unexpected relatedness comes up, and this isn't always easy for them to talk about.
Recently, during an appointment with somebody we will call "Jane," (because that's what you call a woman when you aren't really using her real name) the following tools came into play:
What I'd like to share with you was a lesson she taught herself while revealing something I think we can all relate to: feeling used.
"I feel like they [my friends] only seek my company for my services and not me personally," said Jane.
Jane, who is a highly trained chef, told me that friends will call her up and invite her over for tea. What she thinks is going to include some much needed girlfriend banter about life and love winds up being a Q&A session about what they're doing wrong with this dish or how they can't seem to master this skill or that.
She went on to express that she later realized they only text her when they have a cooking question; they only email to talk about having her host a dinner party; and she was starting to think she should be charging for their 'teatimes' since it was turning into work anyhow. Despite their offers to "share the batch of cookies once they're done" or "host the dinner party next time," they never follow-through and she isn't about to remind them of their offers.
What to do about the feelings of burnout when your friends seem to only want you for your services?
What's so tricky about this situation is that you are the sum of all your parts, and her chefyness is in fact part of what makes her interesting to others. Her connection to food may be what introduced them to begin with, or what unites them on common ground.
The part that hurts is that she feels more dread than joy when these friends text. Rather than exchanging their time, they're taking her time and asking her to offer her valuable training, which she makes a living doing, over what should be their time to release and connect on a personal level.
After asking whether or not she has expressed her feelings to her friends, she said no, "I don't want them to feel hurt since I know they are not intentionally trying to hurt me." That's just it, though...
The people who are used to taking, are often unaware when they need to give.
And while they are not mindfully seeking her time with an intent to injure her, they are also not mindfully offering their most valuable asset: their time.
The start of change...
How would you handle this situation if it were you?
June has been a month of tremendous and unexpected growth for me. I was asked to present a closing speech at the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Paso Robles and the experience was life-changing.
The following is an excerpt from my speech to share with you my experience:
Thank you Millie for co-creating with your team to put on such an event. What an amazing group of people you all are. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more inspiring group of individuals from all walks of life come together for any one cause.
Like Millie mentioned, my name is Stephanie Austin and I’m a certified holistic health and nutrition coach, and owner of www.WellnessByMotherNature.com.
When Millie first asked me to present a speech at the closing ceremonies, I figured, I’ve got this – I’m a writer and a holistic health practitioner, I’ll present the latest nutritional studies and maybe even some whole-life healing techniques.
Trust me, if given the time, I would talk and talk about nutritional healing, but after last night’s Luminaria ceremony, I drove home behind tears realizing, what can I possibly teach this group? How can I possibly inspire them? What can I say that will help them celebrate, remember and fight back? Because in less than one hour, I learned more from you all than you can learn from me here today.
I learned the strength of connection and community from the complete stranger who sat down so close beside me, I almost thought they didn’t see me. Then I looked behind me and realized they didn’t have much else to choose from because this place was so filled with people who are here to help one another heal at whatever stage you’re in.
I witnessed healing through humility, laughter and joy as grown men danced around wearing bras on the outside of their clothes and children played to the latest tunes from the DJ. What a great DJ right?
What was most overwhelming to me was when you showed me what magnitude of hope there is to experience. Last night, David Lee asked us all, “Who represents your hope?”
In a rather famous Relay event poem called HOPE:
“H” is for Hope, which is everlasting.
“O” is for Oneness, because we all stand united in the fight against this dreaded disease.
“P” is for Power, because that is what we have, as part of the more than 4000 events across our beautiful nation!
“E” is for Eradication, because we will ERADICATE cancer and make it a distant memory!
So what can I possibly teach you about hope?
Amid such hope as when you’re hoping for the life of your loved ones, that is when we really learn how to LIVE, right?! While I am sorry you’ve had to experience such illness and loss, I can really see how thoroughly it has taught you all how to LIVE.
Look at your commitment to this event. Look at the people you were here for. Not just the people you came with or for but everyone here.
To those with cancer, let the survivors offer you hope. Connect with your community of healers and embrace every avenue of whole-life healing you can.
To the survivors, be the hope for others who are going through what you’ve been through. Sometimes the best way to heal is to help somebody go through what you’ve already seen.
To those here who have lost loved ones to cancer, you are a survivor with a different definition, and you can carry on the legacy of your loved ones’ fight by helping others learn what you’ve learned.
To the caregivers, you are like Mr. Lee’s hope – the light when they can’t find the switch for themselves. Hope is what is needed when we cannot do it for ourselves....
I continue the speech with some nutritional background and how important it is to change the terrain within our body to an environment where 'dis'ease and cancer cannot flourish as it currently does in our overly-acidic and inflammatory-causing diets.
I am forever grateful for the reception I received as I read this speech through tears and sniffles. The dedication people have to this cause has forever inspired me to continue teaching Eating for Healing.
This was an exciting opportunity for me. Dave The Raw Food Trucker came through San Luis Obispo County to share his phenomenal healing story with us at Bliss Cafe (thanks to our mutual friend and photographer JoJo Shaiken Photography. After discussing the many benefits of a raw, vegan and organic lifestyle rich in fresh green juices, Dave invited me up to share my background with losing over 60 pounds after changing to a vegetarian and raw food diet. On day 48 of my 60-day juice cleanse, it was incredibly inspiring to me to meet such a person as Dave. He advised the attendees that I am the local resource for raw, vegan nutrition and juice coaching, and then we carried on with magnificent discussions on nutrition, healing and metaphysics. Stay tuned for some future collaborations!
There is a field of study recognized by traditional medicine called psychoneuroimmunology, which is the "study of the interaction between psychological processes and the nervous and immune systems of the human body."
Basically, science has proven that each emotion, thought and expression of belief, has an affect on the nervous system, which in turn has an affect on the body's defense mechanisms. You become what you think, feel and project, so it is just as integral a part of healing to adjust your way of thinking as it is to take medication or modify your diet.
Experts in this field of mind-body healing include Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra and Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, to name a few. In one Ohio State University study Kiecolt-Glaser was part of, they noted a spectrum of diseases "whose onset and course may be influenced by proinflammatory cytokines, from cardiovascular disease to frailty and functional decline; proinflammatory cytokine production can be directly stimulated by negative emotions and stressful experiences and indirectly stimulated by chronic or recurring infections."
Louise Hay is the author of You Can Heal Your Life, an international best seller. After learning firsthand how to heal herself from cancer, she realized that "If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed."
As a Holistic Health Practitioner, I offer workshops on mind-body healing which has helped hundreds of people reach an even greater sense of wellness beyond supplemental or dietary therapy. By recognizing that each ailment or injury your body presents reflects subconscious aspects hidden within yourself, you are able to put an end to needless suffering that 'everything else hasn't helped' thus far.
For example, Krista kept stubbing her left big-toe on the bed-frame at least several times per week. While this seems like small suffering in the big picture, she wanted to understand why this keeps happening. After a brief discussion on the women in her life, we concluded that she had a feminine influence in her environment that inhibited her from progress. After regaining her personal power and readjusting her perception on this situation, the toe injuries stopped.
Another client went through treatment of breast cancer and while she came to be for nutritional guidance to create an inhospitable environment for cancer to grow, we also worked with her emotions on motherhood (not being a mother but controlling other people).
One of the most famous characters who perfectly demonstrates healing from the inside out is Dr. Adams. "Patch" Adams is the founder of the Gesundheit! Institute, plus he's an M.D., clown and author. He was made famous by the movie called Patch Adams starring Robin Williams. "The Gesundheit! Institute is a project in holistic medical care based on the belief that one cannot separate the health of the individual from the health of the family, the community, the world, and the health care system itself." He healed people through laughter and by changing the minds of ailing clients to a more positive and healthy outlook rather than sick and diseased.
Write the word "Smile" on a piece of paper and below it, draw a happy, smiling face. Tape this paper to your ceiling or wall beside your bed so that it is the first thing you see when you wake up. BELIEVE yourself happy, healthy and prosperous and you will create this from the inside out. Science says so!

Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner, Stephanie Austin, was guided into holistic living in 2002 when she was diagnosed with Dermatomyositis, an uncommon autoimmune disease affecting the skin and muscle.
Opting for education rather than medication, Austin enrolled in a Holistic Health Practitioner program in 2004 after realizing she'd been gifted with disease so that she may learn to heal herself and later teach others to do the same.
Since her education, Austin has released over 60 pounds and conquered years of junk food addiction through holistic healing and nutrition techniques that she now passes onto others through her business, Wellness by Mother Nature.
Austin has been the Director of Education and Board Member for the nonprofit organization, The Wellness Kitchen. She is the recipient of the 2015 Outstanding Graduate Award from www.ACHS.edu.
Austin is an author, coach and speaker who empowers people on the healing value of nutrition and the innate self-healing abilities of a body in balance.
She has helped hundreds of people achieve balance through methods such as meditation, herbs, movement, supplements, aromatherapy, homeopathy, nutrition, mind-body connection, energy healing and by closely listening to the needs of her clients.
It is awareness that brings change, not your effort. Why does it happen through awareness? - because the awareness changes you. And when you are different, the world is different. It is not a question of creating a different world, it is only a question of creating a different you. You are your world; so if you change, the world changes.
